When we arrived at the Sydney airport we looked at the departures board and saw listed a JetStar flight departing at 12:35 PM for Melbourne out of Gate 53. Our JetStar flight was departing at 12:35pm for Melbourne, so we went and waited to board at Gate 53. When they started boarding, we got in line and worked are way all the way up to when it was time to scan our boarding passes. The scanning machine rejected them saying this was the wrong flight! It turns out there are TWO airports in Melbourne and flights to both airports in Melbourne were leaving at exactly 12:35 PM! I had booked a flight to the wrong Melbourne airport! The one I booked was to Melbourne - Avalon (AUD) and the one I wanted to book to was MEL. The airport I booked was about 40 miles from our hotel while the other was only 20 miles from our hotel. That would be like flying into LAX instead of SNA to get to Anaheim. Not a huge mistake, but did make the cost of our Uber trip about double.
So, once we found out we were waiting at the wrong gate, we hurried over to the flight board to find out what gate we were supposed to be at for our flight and hoped we hadn't miss the boarding. It turns out it was just at the next gate, Gate 54 insteat of Gate 53. It had not yet started to board, but we had to get at the very end of a very long line that you can see in the above photo.
Also in the above photos you can see JetStar and Virgin Australia aircraft. The are 2 of the main domestic airlines in Australia, as well as doing some international flights.
We each got $10 in free food credits because of our purchase of additional baggage. We purchaed the Sip & Snack Combo for $15 plus a Nutty Traveler for $5. For the drink we purchased the above wine.
The above are photos of the Avalon-Melbourne Airport (AUD) where we landed, out in the middle of nowhere. Looks a bit like what the Ontario Airport used to look like before all the farmland got developed into industrial and residential areas. The airport loads and unloads passengers using rolling stairways to both the front and back of the plane like the Ontario, California, airported used to, and I think the Long Beach, California, airport still does.
