We signed up for this Premium Whiskey Tasting event. I don't think they expected so many people to show up for this event or they probably would have held it in a larger venue. It was held in the Piano Bar which is one of the smaller venue on the ship and almost every seat was taken up!
This is where I get to give my speech of why you should not buy the "Drinks Package" unless you are a "SUPER" heavy drinker. Barbara and I maybe drink enough to be considered to have a drinking problem by the medical establishment, but I don't believe we are. We don't drink until evening and we feel no desire that we MUST have a drink. We do average 2 to 4 drinks per evening, mostly wine. That does not reach the level of making a "Drinks Package" on a cruise worth the price. Generally you need to average at least 6 drinks per day to save money by buying a Drinks Package. On this cruise, we would have to pay about US $79 per day per person, or US $158 per day for the two of us. We have as yet come close to spending that on drinks. We are on the third day of the cruise. If we had purchased the drinks package, the one US $9.50 beer that I purchased would have been included. So by not buying a Drinks Package we saved US $158 for Monday, US $158 for Tuesday and US $158 for Wednesday for a total savings of $474 for the first 3 days of our cruise, minus the one $9.50 beer, for a net savings of US $464.50!
Did we not enjoy any alcoholic beverages on these first 3 days? Of course we did! We brought 2 bottles of wine onboard that we were allowed. We had purchased these bottles of wines in Sydney, Australia, at a much lower price of wine on the ship. We finished most of the first bottle of the wine the first day of our cruise saving US $158 by not having a Drinks Package for that first day. On the second day of the cruise we went to The Chef's Table event that cost us US $111.51 each, or a total of US $223.02. At that event we started of with complimentary glasses of sparkling wine. As we finished them, they refilled them. I think Barbara and I each ended up having 2 glasses each. Once we sat at our table for dinner, we were given a glass of white wine and a glass of red wine. As we finished each, they would refill them. I totally lost track of how many glasses of wine we each drank. I'm just guessing I drank 2 glasses of white wine and 3 glasses of red wine. They then served us a glass of dessert wine. So we definitely had no use for the Drinks Package on the second day of our cruise on the second day, saving another US $158 on Tuesday! Actually, our savings of US $316 of not having a Drinks Package on Day 1 & 2 was more than enough to cover the US $223.02 cost of The Chef's Table!
On the third day of the cruise we went to the $30 Whiskey Tasting Event. Because it was priced in Australian dollars, it was only USD $21.71 per person costing only $43.42 for the two of us. Each pour of 4 different whiskeys was about 2 ounces, so we each drank about 8 ounces of whiskey which is quite a lot! That is about all we needed to drink on the third cruise day. US $43.42 is a lot less than the US $158 this day had we purchased the Drinks Package. But it gets better! If we do end up buying any bottles of alcohol in the onboard Duty Free Shop, they will deduct our $43.42 from the cost of that purchase!
