Today we visited Paddy's Market at Haymarket, just a block from our hotel. We only spent about 30 minutes here as it was mostly food, bars, souveneir shops, clothing sores and other discount stores. From their own website description:

For food lovers, Paddy's Haymarket is the place to be for fresh fruit and vegetables . The markets at Haymarket has been the home for growers and producers for over a century. Come and try it for yourself!

For the seafood lovers there is plenty of fresh fish, prawns and the best catch of the day. Paddy's is a market that has something for everyone and even a library of music, art and books to enjoy. For the budget conscious, the marketplace at Paddy's Haymarket is sure to provide plenty of bargains. Paddy's Haymarket is a must for tourists who are looking for Australian souvenirs and cheap gifts that are fair dinkum Aussie.

For Mother's Day, we went to The Meat & Wine Company South Africa Steak Restaurant on Castlereagh Street in Sydney, Australia.

Their website says:

So, I'll let you in on a little business secret. As some of you know, we used to own the Silver Rails Vineyards and Winery. The way restaurants set a price for a glass of wine is they usually charge you what it costs them wholesale for the entire bottle of wine for that one glass. In that way, if nobody buys another glass of wine from that bottle, they can just throw the rest of the bottle of wine away and they have at least broke even and not lost any money. Any glasses of wine they sell from that bottle after the first glass are pure profit.

We paid $75 AUD for the above bottle of wine. That is about USD $54. This same bottle of wine can be purchased in the United States for as little as USD $19 per bottle! The wine was excellent, but you can see how Australia restaurants way overcharge for bottles of wine. In the USA, this would be considered a "budget wine" while here in Australia it is priced as an exclusive wine.

We started off with a bruchetta that was excellent. They gave Barbara a free glass of sparkling wine in celebration of Mother's Day.

On the left, that is a skewer of Kangaroo meat. You may think of Kangaroos as being cute, but in Australia they are about the equivalent of deer in the United States. There are a lot of them and they are a hazard on roads. Many vehicles that frequent the outback have huge steel bars in the front of their vehicles so the vehicles doesn't get destroyed when they hit a kangaroo, as that happens frequently. Kangaroo meat can be a bit gamey, just like deer. The recommendation is to have it cooked Medium Rare as cooking it longer can make the meat a bit tough. That is the way we had our skewer cooked and it was excellent! It went very well with the wine.

In the middle above photo is the filet steak we ordered. The restaurant described exactly how each cooking preparation works. They said that Medium would result with the inside mostly pink while Medium Well would result with some but not too much pink. That is exactly how we like our steak cooked, with just a little pink inside but not too much. They did an excellent job of cooking it Medium Well just like that. At the Black Angus Steakhouse, you take your chances. When ordering Medium Well, it can sometimes come out with too much pink, and other times too well done with no pink at all. But this place took pride in making sure the steak comes out exactly how you order it. We shared both items we ordered including the salad.

As you can see from the above right photo, we decided to each have a espresso martini instead of some other decadent dessert.

As we were walking back to our hotel, the above caught my eye from a fire station that we were passing. Obviously it is some sort of fire fighting museum with relics of past fire fighting clothing and equipment. Right after we passed these museum pieces were several doors of a modern fire station with the latest fire fighting trucks and other equipment.
